Over 98 % of our bariatric procedures have been successfully completed laparoscopically (minimally invasive surgery). We take great care to perform your surgery laparoscopically because of the many advantages it affords to the patient. These include less pain, wound complications, infections, cardiopulmonary complications, scarring and a faster recovery. Some centers claim that they perform minimally invasive bariatric surgery. Many patients only find out later in the process that they don’t qualify at these centers for laparoscopic surgery. A common weight limit is 250 pounds. Those patients over 250 pounds are then told that their surgery can’t be done laparoscopically (minimally invasive surgery) based on this randomly chosen weight limit. They are then encouraged to have their surgery performed through a large, painful incision. Many are also disqualified for the minimally invasive technique because of prior open surgery. It’s true that heavier patients are at higher risk for surgical complications but this is true even if surgery is performed through a large incision. It is also true that prior open surgery can increase the level of difficulty for the surgeon. However laparoscopy can be safely performed in a majority of these patients and can benefit them greatly. We cannot guarantee every patient a minimally invasive surgery, but we will surely let you know if it is reasonable at your first visit taking all factors into account. We have successfully performed minimally invasive surgery on patients well over 450 pounds.
We really care. Nothing is more satisfying than changing someone’s life in a positive way. We make every effort to make sure that your experience will be positive. We try to treat patients as we would like to be treated. After all…”what goes around comes around.”
You will not be treated like a number. We offer prompt service and attention that other bariatric centers may not be able to offer. We encourage you to attend other bariatric center information sessions and ask past patients about their experiences.
Are there weight limits or other criteria that exclude patients from minimally invasive surgery?
How easy it is ( or isn’t) to contact the surgeon at night or when there is a question?
Ask about surgeon attention to patient needs.
Was the office staff helpful and courteous?
Did office visits with the surgeon feel “rushed”?
Ask if the surgeon personally, very thoroughly explained the details of the operation.
Was adequate time allowed for your questions?
Then attend our bariatric information session and ask the same questions of our past patients. Our patients answers and experiences will speak for themselves.
